In-Game Settings

This page will serve as an overview of all the settings within Nuclear Throne and the mechanics behind a few of them. Settings can be changed from the main menu or at any point in a run, unless specified otherwise.

Settings will be listed in order they are seen in u99r1 (Non-Beta), while Beta unique mechanics will be listed at the bottom.

Audio

1. Master Volume
- Slider that controls all volume in the game.

2. Music Volume
- Slider that controls the sound of music in the game.
- Only utility in a run is to tell when a boss is killed (if boss intros are disabled), or if a boss is killed off-screen.

3. Ambience Volume
- Slider that controls the sound of ambience volume in the game.
- Ambience has no relation to gameplay whatsoever, thus can be muted without worry.

4. 3D Sound
- A toggle to enable or disable 3D sound.
- If 3D sound is enabled then enemies in close proximity will be louder.
- This will also differentiate between sounds made on the left and right side, though not useful in telling if sounds are comming from upwards or downwards.
- If there is too much loud noises going on at once some sounds that are off-screen may get drowned out, such as vans spawning in.
- Disabling 3D sounds will avoid sounds getting drowned out, but without the benefit of hearing directional sound cues.

Video

1. Fullscreen
- Toggles how the display should behave.
- Fullscreen will minimize the application if alt+tabbed.
- Borderless will appear like fullscreen but allows for alt+tabbing without minimizing.
- Toggling fullscreen off will be a windowed application. The size of the application can be controlled freely, but the resolution will always remain to 4:3.

2. Crosshair
- Toggles between 8 different crosshairs for the cursor to use. Crosshair 1 is the default.

Crosshair 1

Crosshair 2

Crosshair 3

Crosshair 4

Crosshair 5

Crosshair 6

Crosshair 7

Crosshair 8

3. Side Art
- Has 9 different side arts to choose from for aesthetic purposes.
- None will have no side art at all.
- Options 1-3 has a vault symbol in variants of brown, purple and green.
- Options 4-6 has crown symbols that also comes in brown, purple and green variants.
- Option 7 is YV's logo pattern in red.
- Option 8 is IDPD patterns featuring a Grunt, Inspector and Shielder in blue.

4. Screenshake
- Slider that toggles the intensity of screenshake.
- Shooting any weapon will shake the screen, heavier hitting weapons will shake the screen more. Also effected by explosions.
- Having it on 0% will disable screenshake completely.
- The slider can be moved beyond the visual 100% maximum, it secretly has 200% screenshake as a max value. Cannot be done using the mouse, but arrow keys and controller will work.

5. Freeze Frames
- Slider that toggles the effects of freezeframes.
- Hitting enemies will cause temporary hitlag to give more impact to each kill.
- This creates artificial lag which can be utilized to give more reaction time. This gives it usefulness even in meta, which is explained in further detail here. (Move section below later)

- Within meta, freeze frames can be utilized to create artificial lag to increase response time in particularly difficult areas in the later loops (think like L8+ generally).
- The most optimal areas to abuse freeze frames is 4-1, 7-1 and 7-2. (Though keeping them on through 0-1 is fine). These areas have less lag than others, but have particularly dangerous damage sources which makes artificial lag beneficial.
- Generally around 40% is a good number for these areas, 50% if playing especially safe. There is no harm in experimenting with higher/lower numbers.

6. Hide Hud
- Toggles whether hud icons should be shown or not.
- The hud includes all the overlay icons including HP, rad level, held weapons, ammo levels, mutations and in-game timer.
- Specific parts of the hud cannot be individually toggled aside from the timer, so having the hud off is a bad idea.

7. Gamepad Style
- Changes what gamepad buttons appear for controllers for visual indicators, between xbox and playstation controller layouts.

Game

1. Boss Intros
- Toggles whether or not boss intro cards should play when a boss spawns.
- Can distract from gameplay so is usually turned off by experienced players.

2. Delete Data
- An option to completely wipe save data, counting down from 3.
- Cannot be used mid-run, only from main menu settings.
- Without a save backup there is no way to recover save data.

3. Play Tutorial
- Enables replaying the tutorial level.
- Cannot be used mid-run, only from main menu settings.
- Once enabled hitting the 'Play' button will allow for Tutorial access.

4. Timer
- Enables the in-game timer.
- The timer will stop during level transitions and when the game is paused, but it will not stop during mutation/crown selection.
- Because of lag in-game the timer will not reflect real time. The further a run goes the less accurate it may be.

5. Stream Key
Currently not working.
- Enables a stream key which can be used to track data from a run. This can be used to give information to third-party programs, such as displaying live run information over Discord.
- If the stream key is enabled, Thronebutt.com can automatically track runs via your player profile that is normally used for daily tracking, for any run that ends with over 60 kills.
- Data is only viewable from your profile if you are signed in through Steam on the website.

6. Cursor
- Toggles between Default, Native and Compatible cursors.
- Default will have the cursor remain within the borders of the screen and will not overlap the side art. It runs at the same FPS as the game.
- Native will have the cursor run at the same framerate as one's own computer system, and will overlap the side art.
- Compatible appears to be functionally the same as native cursor, but noticeably smaller at larger game resolutions.

7. Mouselock
- Toggles whether or not mouselock is enabled.
- If enabled it will prevent the cursor from leaving the screen, which is primarily useful for dual monitors.
- The only way to leave the screen is with alt+tabbing if enabled.

8. View Credits
- Views the credits of the game that is normally seen at the end of a run.
- Will not include the credits theme.

Controls

1. Gamepad
- Enables the usage of gamepad.
- Will only turn on if a controller is currently connected.

2. Autoaim
- Toggles the usage of autoaim, which is only usable with controller.
- Will try to align the cursor on screen with the position of any nearby enemies to make aiming easier.
- This will reduce the ability to aim at specific enemies, meaning it's harder to prioritize specific threats.

3. Aim
- Toggles controller layout between left handed and right handed.
- Movement and aim buttons on a controller get swapped to better suit the primary hand.

The rest of the control options are related to movement and can be re-bound.
While controllers can differ, here is the defaults for Keyboard & Mouse controls:

Unlisted controls cannot be rebinded.

2021 openbeta

Additions to Video settings

1. VSync
- Toggles vsync on or off.
- Intended to prevent screen tearing, but can possibly add input lag.
- VSync can sometimes turn itself back on even if toggled off and appears off, making it a buggy option.

2. Window Scale
- Only can toggled in windowed mode (fullscreen set to off)
- Will automatically change the window size in 4:3 fashion, scaling between 4 different sizes. Side art will not be visible as the screen size is exactly 4:3.
- Auto allows for the screen to be adjusted to custom screen sizes again.

Additions to Game settings

1. Autopause
- Toggles whether autopause is on or off.
- If enabled the game will automatically pause if tabbed out for any reason.

2. Framerate
- Can switch between 30 FPS and 60 FPS.
- Cannot be used mid-run, only from main menu settings.
- 30 FPS is the intended default experience, while 60 FPS gives a much smoother feel to control and play.

3. Delete Data
- Moved to the bottom of the list and opens a new warning screen about data deletion, with the countdown increased to 5.

Win_64 2023 Beta

'Mechanics' is a new sub-screen under the Game settings.

1. Stream Key is moved to Mechanics but functions the same.

2. Framerate now includes a 120 FPS option, but is restricted from dailies/weeklies.

3. Aspect Ratio
- Default is 4:3, but includes a 1:1 as well as 16:9.
- 16:9 is widescreen which allows the player to see far more on the screen that is usually covered by side art. It is restricted from dailies/weeklies.

4. Custom FPS/Size
- Opens another sub-menu to allow for specific FPS and aspect ratios outside of the selections listed above.
- Custom FPS above 60 will restrict daily/weekly access.
- There is a bug where playing above 120 FPS will not work and set it back down to 120. A fix to this is to setting the desired FPS, exiting the game, and then re-launching it.

5. Rad Attract
- Changes rad drops behavior.
- Classic: Default rad behavior. Rads will often get stuck on corners on 30 FPS.
- Fast: Like classic rads without wall sticking.
- Modern: If rads cannot reach player, will fly around in circles wildly to try to get around walls.
