Ultra A: Refined Taste

Ultra B: Regurgitate

Refined Taste Ultra: "High Tier Weapons Only" Regurgitate Ultra: "Eating Weapons Can Drop Chests"

Here is a drop table for Regurgitate chances, with a 10,000 sample size for each. "CoNone" means Bare Head, "CoCurses" stands for Crown of Curses and "CoAny" for any other crown. IDPD is based on whether IDPD Chests can appear or not, based on areas.

Preloop Strategy Guide

Robot is a character that is more beginner-friendly in preloop. Their active ability is useful in similar ways to Fish's passive for extra ammo, and their passive ability gives a nice boost that can really come in handy to new players.

Active Rating: (Text)
Robot is able to utilize any weapon drops that other characters would normally leave behind, consuming them for ammo or health. This makes ammo management much easier as any weapon dropped can be considered a free extra ammo pickup, which is guaranteed to give the ammo type for the secondary weapon held if not giving health.

Weapons that drop early in the level can even be saved for when Robot takes damage, rushing back to eat it to possibly regain health and have a safer comeback. They can also save weapons for the very end of the level to guarantee a stronger start for the following level. If Robot is low on ammo/health at the end of a level it doesn't hurt to walk back through the area to check for any missed weapon drops, even if it adds time to a run.

Passive Rating: (Text)
It is useful to be familiar with the weapon drop table. Any time a portal is entered the table is advanced by one column, Robot will automatically start at the second column at the start of a run. Visiting Pizza Sewers and Vaults are a nice benefit to any run, and adding on top of Robot's active adds more chances to see better weapons much sooner than they would otherwise. While this also provides an extra benefit for cursed chests as well, be aware that cursed weapons can impede Robot's active ability in some cases.

Having a chance to see better weapons sooner will sometimes come in handy during a run, but other runs may not. This passive will be particularly useful still for any players that are just trying to beat preloop, as having a really good weapon drop can change the outcome of a run entirely. For more experienced players, it's mostly just a nice extra benefit.

Thronebutt Rating: (Text)
Robot's TB will double the pickups gained from weapon drops, which is a nice extra bonus in preloop. While there are other mutations that are more useful to survival, this is a good pick at this point of the game.

For other mutation picks, Robot is a fairly standard character and can take whatever mutations feel the most useful. If looking for specific advice though, Robot could optionally pass up on ammo/health mutations if they have other good picks in a mutation set. Rhino Skin and Back Muscle are good options for instance to make sure Robot's active is fully being benefitted from.

While taking Crown of Guns or Heavy Heart sounds useful on paper for Robot's active, going out of the way to get these boosts is not worth it. Heavy Heart requires 3 weapon-related mutations in order to see, which will lead to a weaker mutation set overall. Crown of Guns downside can be negated by Robot's active to a degree, but some areas can burn through ammo very quickly and may leave Robot in a vulnerable position, especially during boss fights.

Loop Strategy Guide

Robot is fairly standard in loop as their ultras are not particularly game breaking, just serving as another beneficial boost. For this reason they're considered more of a vanilla character, as their passive stops benefiting the run any further and their active's usefulness diminishes a bit. Ammo and health are much more common, and trying to eat weapons on the fly can be very dangerous with many more enemies. Another issue of trying to quickly eat weapons is misinputs, Robot could accidentally eat one of their main weapons.

Auto-Eat Rating: (Text)
Both ultras gives Robot the auto-eat function, meaning that all weapons will be automatically eaten when entering the exit portal. This is useful to speed up gameplay and not have to check back through entire levels, although the player will not get to choose which weapon gets the ammo pickups as it's a 50/50 for each pickup. If wanting ammo for a specific weapon, Robot can still manually eat weapons before leaving the level.

Refined Taste Rating: (Text)
There are 108 weapons in the normal pool, Refined Taste removes 28 of them totaling 80. Carrying two weapons from the drop pool means there are 106 normal pool / 78 Refined pool. This means that there is a 0.94% chance of any drop being a specific weapon normally, while a 1.28% chance with Refined Taste. While this seems small percentage wise, the 28 weapons removed from the pool are almost all useless in loop which makes it so Robot will have much more decent options to choose from. On top of this, golden weapon drops are much more frequent which Robot can get extra pickups out of.

Regurgitate Rating: (Text)
Robot's ultra giving a 43% chance of turning weapons into chests is decently high, but still a weaker version of Fish's Confiscate which has far more opportunities to proc and Fish can choose when to open the chests. When Robot gets a chest it can double ammo from an ammo chest (or more if IDPD chest), double health from a health chest, or get a weapon reroll with a weapon chest. The first downside to this ultra is that present chests can spawn, which is pretty unhelpful. However the other downside is that if Robot manually walks into a portal then it will not automatically open chests, meaning they actively miss out on drops. Chests will be opened only if Robot goes through the level manually eating weapons, or if the portal happens to open directly under them.

Refined Taste or Regurgitate?
Regurgitate limiting auto-eat's usefulness is notable, making Refined Taste usually the better pick here. While the extra boosts from Regurgitate are nice to have, a similar argument can be made for Refined Taste making golden weapon drops much more frequent (12 / 78 weapons rather than 12 / 106), while always enjoying the full benefit of auto-eat. For this reason along with Refined Taste's usefulness in seeing better weapons much more often, it is usually the best pick for a run.

Thronebutt Rating: (Text)
Robot's TB is still a decent mutation at this point, but would be overshadowed by other mutations such as Rabbit Paw given how frequent drops are in loop. This is still a better option than many 'bad' mutations, but can easily be passed up in most situations. As usual, any mutations around survival would be the best picks.

Meta Strategy Guide

Note that this is an advanced guide, it is meant to be used by those primarily looking at loops 3+. This builds off of content shared in the meta guide.

Robot holds a bit of a reputation for being the most vanilla character because of how they handle meta. While this is not a particularly negative connotation, they are also fairly overlooked at this point of the game. The reason for being viewed as vanilla is that their passive does nothing at this point, and their active requires a few extra inputs to get some extra ammo/health which is not too useful in the fast-paced nature of deeploop gameplay, meaning it can go frequently underutilized.

If Robot ever accidentally misclicks their active key it can cause them to lose SPC or ushov, which can be run ending. For this reason some Robot players opt to re-bind their active keys completely. A key can be selected that won't be hit accidentally, but can still be reached with some ease.

Refined Taste Rating: (Text)
This is the better option between the two ultras for Robot runs. Golden weapons giving 4 pickups are worth stopping for and are much more frequent with this ultra, and the auto-eat function is not hindered unlike Regurgitate. Other smaller benefits include seeing weapons like Super Crossbow or Energy Hammer a bit more often, which are particularly useful for specific boss fights such as Big Bandit and Mom. This ultra is a useful passive boost without any downsides.

Regurgitate Rating: (Text)
Similar to the loop section, Regurgitate hinders auto-eat as chests will not be opened if Robot manually walks to the exit portal. Another issue is that if Robot decides to swap out their weapon for another one to eat, a chest could spawn underneath them which pushes their weapon slightly to the side, making Regurgitate even less reliable in tense moments. This is made worse if a cursed chest happens to spawn (due to running Crown of Blood), which would force Robot to take 7 damage just to continue their run normally. Regurgitate can be dangerous to use in mid-combat, and not reliable for auto-eating, which more so hinders Robot's active ability rather than helps it.

Thronebutt Rating: (Text)
At this point Thronebutt is a waste of a mutation slot due to the infrequency of weapon eating. Robot is best suited to run any standard meta set as they do not provide any particular benefit compared to other mutants.
