Strategy Guide

Crown of Haste is one of the better picks from preloop selection, though not being a high bar to begin with. The upside of extra HP and ammo is worth it if the downside is properly negated. For this reason Plutonium Hunger should be seen as a vital mutation while running this crown to make collecting pickups easier and reduce the risk for pushing towards pickups about to despawn.

For preloop, Haste will be the most useful as the pickup fade time is very manageable. The extra boost to health drops from +2 to +3 without using up a mutation slot is particularly useful, with the +1 to ammo drops being a nice bonus. The +1 will mean more to some ammo types than others - Bullets will go from +32 to +33 which is hardly worth it, but Explosive & Bolt weapons have the lowest ammo yield per pickup, meaning that they would benefit the most. Generally the crown is best used with a semi-aggressive playstyle in order to ensure pickups are collected, while killing most enemies at close or medium range.

While in loop the benefits of Haste drops off dramatically due to the nature of gameplay. In a normal run it's recommended to swap out for a loop crown instead right away, as missing pickups here may be much more frequent. If the crown is still being run such as for a weekly, keep leaning into a more aggressive playstyle to constantly collect more pickups. Any weapon that deals high damage and takes heavy ammo are good picks to suit this playstyle.

During meta play (loops 3+), Haste runs will start to struggle with how quickly pickups may despawn, particularly with rads for ushov. Many off-screen kills from SPC will have pickups that will be easily missed, meaning a bit slower play may be worth it - mainly shooting SPC towards close by enemy groupings to ensure pickup collection. Popo Freaks may have to be heavily leaned on if rad management ever becomes an issue, even if that means waiting for them to respawn while in a corner during low rad moments. Any half-baked meta build without Plutonium Hunger will likely fall apart at this point.
