Tech
- Chests will burst into 16 rads when walked over.
- Walking over chests will cause 1 damage, which can be lethal.
- This includes any chest variant that can be walked over to open, as well as rad cans and portal strikes.
- If rad cans are destroyed by using a weapon instead they will not drop additional rads or cause player damage.
- Similarly if a portal opens any chest, it will not cause damage and not give rads.
- Health chests being walked over while at 1 HP will not kill the player.
- Chests spawned from Robot's Regurgitate and Fish's Confiscate will damage the player and give rads.
Strategy Guide
Crown of Hatred gives up to 48 extra rads in a level at the expense of 3 health. As a loop crown this is largely insignificant in the face of how abundent rads are at that point of the game, so is fairly easy to overlook. In fact it's easy to forget about running the crown in the first place, causing unintentional deaths as chests would be walked over automatically without second thought.
The most impactful part Hatred has on gameplay is for preloop, such as for weeklies. Particularly the first few areas as health drops are so scarce, which makes opening every single chest is not viable. Rad cans can be broken with weapons to save damage taken from just chests. Being low on HP may mean skipping chests entirely, so any healing mutations from the first few levels will come in handy. The main benefit of Hatred in preloop is leveling up quicker.
On normal runs typically Hatred is only taken at the loop vault, where the player may already be at max level. The only use of rads at this point of the game are for ultra weapons (or Horror's rad beam), and the extra rads can fuel a few extra shots. This is not necessary at all to make ultra weapons viable, as Plutonium Hunger can more than carry in that department. If the goal is to unlock Crown of Hatred it's a simple matter - just play the run as normal, but be cautious of opening chests at low HP.
For meta play (loop 3+) gameplay is fairly vanilla and no specific strategies have to be applied aside from avoiding chests at low HP.
Character/Mutation Notes:
- Any healing mutation can easily negate the downside of the crown.
- Robot and Rebel can heal back up easily with their active/passive.
- Hatred will only be bad for Melting as a low HP character. Especially on preloop start, he will be unable to even open most chests.
- Fish's Confiscate makes levels essentially minefields of damage which is very dangerous, even with the inclusion of health chests. For this reason Gun Warrant is the safer pick.
- Robot's Regurgitate may lead to unwanted damage as well, however this is more easily negated with their active. Refined Taste is still the safer option.
